Muzaffarabad : Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry on Tuesday defeated his opponent as the 28th president of (AJK) by getting 34 votes.

Muzaffarabad, August 17 (ZNN): Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) regional president Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry on Tuesday defeated his opponent as the 28th president of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) by getting 34 votes from the joint opposition Mian. Mian Waheed got 16 votes.

Newly elected President Sardar Muhammad Masood Khan will take oath of office on August 24 after his term expires.

The election was held in a special session of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly chaired by Speaker Chaudhry Anwar-ul-Haq and had a total of 50 members who cast their votes out of 52.

Those who did not cast their vote were PPP members from Kotli Chaudhry. Yasin and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) member and former speaker Shah Ghulam Qadir.

Barrister Sultan began his political career in 1983 after graduating from the UK and was elected the youngest member of the Azad Kashmir Legislative Assembly in 1985 from the platform of the Azad Muslim Conference. Noor Hussain

He has the special honor of being elected a member of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Assembly for the ninth time since 1985 and was elected President as a member of the Legislative Assembly. This seat will be declared vacant after taking oath of office.

He was elected the Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir from the PPP platform from 1996 to 2001. He also served as a Minister and Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly.

The newly elected president also led several political parties such as the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation League after the Azad Muslim Conference, the Pakistan People’s Party, the People’s Muslim League which he founded himself and is currently part of the PTI.
